The unique Schedler house and property is part of Ridgewood’s historic district and is listed on the State of NJ and National Registers of Historic Places. Located within Ridgewood’s historic district, the site is located in an area that was the center of the hamlet of Paramus (now Ridgewood) along a former Indian trail used by the colonials and now known as West Saddle River Road. The property is significant because in March of 1780 it was the site of a battle between the British and Patriots. General George Washington and his troops also occupied the area for various military activity. In fact, the site has yielded artifacts dating from that time and may contain more archaeological artifacts.
The Zabriskie-Schedler House is a rare example of a Dutch framed house. It is one of those rare, intact structures that provides a documented roadmap of 200+ years of development of this historic area. The historic value of the Schedler property is invaluable to Ridgewood, the State of NJ and America.
Disregarding American History, State and National Historic preservation standards, and the Village’s own commissioned Archaeological Assessment (Hunter Research Report) the new Council is proposing a plan that could potentially destroy historical elements. Despite recommendations and mandates, no archaeological survey has been completed.
